In 1946 Alfred Wagg of The Hermitage, Hermitage Lane, East Grinstead, a successful merchant banker and philanthropist, purchased the East Court estate in order to provide a memorial to those people of East Grinstead who lost their lives in the Second World War.
Mr. Wagg planned to have a garden of remembrance, sports facilities, a theatre, community centre, a school and housing. Then in 1949 East Grinstead War Memorial Ltd was incorporated to provide and maintain the estate and to encourage and promote public recreation, education and other charitable projects.
Following the success of the 2009 photo exhibition, the event is being repeated in 2010. More...
